As some of you may know, in September 2015, WipEout hit the big two zero…

Aside from making me feel really old, it did allow me a moment to take stock of all the exciting things that have happened in my life since those mad, mad days at Psygnosis.

I can’t comment on what it was like to work for other software companies, but we certainly did enjoy a bit of a rockstar lifestyle working at “Pig’s Noses”. Sure, there was a lot of hard work, late nights and even some disappointment from time to time. But boy was it fun!

So, to celebrate the game that launched my musical career, I’m rifling through my old MIDI files and sample discs, and I’m rebuilding the music from WipEout, Wipeout 2097(XL) and Wipeout Pure from the ground up in a brand new album but this time, it’s going to be chilled to the max…

My revised take on these tracks comes with 20 years extra experience in composing and production, not to mention the advances in music technology since the 1990s. Some of these tracks will be light and relaxing, some will be moody and brooding, and others will take you on a totally new journey altogether.

You can drop-in on my progress at YouTube and SoundCloud.

+ this will be my first EVER actual physical CD album +

Rest assured, I’ll be pouring my heart and soul into these re-workings. Because that’s what they are… not just a re-mix but, an actual re-write of these tracks from scratch, whilst keeping the melodies, samples and sounds that will hopefully bring back some great memories for you.

I’ll leave you with some links below, and don’t forget to pre-order before 28th December 2015 as we plan to press based on demand.

Thanks again to everyone who joins me on this exciting journey…

Have a great Holiday Season & Wonderful New Year!

Predators, saviours or simply a plague?

Some may disagree, but…

Every part of my being tells me that we humans were put on this Earth to be shepherds, not hunters.

We are the second most potent force on the planet - mother nature being the first - she’ll carry on quite happily without us until the Sun eats the Earth in 4 to 5 Billion years.

As such, shouldn’t we be making the most of the time we have left?

Tending our garden with humility and respect, rather than burning the trees and exterminating all the wildlife? You could argue it’s all moot anyhow if the Earth is going to boil off into space.

I guess it depends on whether you believe in an eternal soul, or karma…

I’m not religious in any conventional sense, but I know I do.

Andy Warhol AMIGA

One my of Facebook notifications today was a link to video which showed how Andy Warhol’s recently discovered AMIGA images were rescued from 30 year old floppy discs.

I’d heard about the discovery a few weeks back, and not really taken much of an interest, aside from taking a look and deciding they weren’t much to look at. Clearly they are of some historical value, but not what you’d describe as masterpieces.

I almost didn’t bother watching the video, but I thought it might be interesting to see people gather around a monitor and do a bit-copy from an old floppy disc - I’ve watched stranger videos!

Just under 9 minutes into the video the background music caught my attention… “hang on a minute, that sounds rather familiar” I thought.

It was most definitely something I’d written in the dim and distant past. Now I just had to try and remember when, and whether or not it was for a game, or just a random piece of music! 10 minutes later, and I had it figured out…

LEANDER (Travellers Tales / Psygnosis) intro music.

Leander AMIGA

It’s nice to hear that track again after so many years… and also have it used in the documenting of something historical. A credit would have been nice, but hey, you can’t have everything. ;o)

The Legacy of MUSICtm - something to be proud of…

It’s heart warming to know that something you designed has gone on to become part of music culture and kicked off a few careers in the process. Here’s a snippet from FACT Mag. The team that worked on these music projects were beyond hard working, and were great fun to work with. Without them none of this would have happened, and my dream to bring music sequencing to the masses would never have happened. :o)

I still use MTVMG2 ( MTV Music Generator 2 ) from time to time… and Slinkytm ( a version of the PC version of MUSIC2000 created for Slinky Night Club ) to create beats.

MUSICtm (1998)

Launched in 1998 and endorsed by the then massive Judge Jules, MUSIC, brought music sequencing to the Sony Playstation, and to kids who maybe didn’t have (or didn’t want) access to a fancy PC and soundcard. It was a basic program with only limited functionality, but its follow-up Music 2000 (known in the US as MTV Music Generator) was about as close to a music sequencer as you could get without shelling out real money.

Amazingly, this new version added MIDI support and even basic sampling – users could replace the game’s PS1 CD with an audio CD and rip, chop and edit samples to their heart’s content, or even record their own sounds from scratch by connecting up a microphone. It might not have been considered anywhere near professional at the time, but you got a great deal for your money.

What did it do?

MUSIC and its follow-up came with a whole suite of samples and sounds which could be fitted together like building blocks, giving a hint of fun and accessibility to the steep learning curve usually associated with DAW software (thanks for that one Logic!). Music 2000 also sported a quite reasonable 24 audio tracks, and MIDI compatibility, which mean that if you happened to have a cheap MIDI keyboard in the house for some reason, you could hook it up and jam out to your heart’s content. It still sounded a little off when compared with the PC/Mac options at the time – Cubase or Logic for example – but that only added to its charm.

Who used it?

Emerging at the tail end of the 1990s, MUSIC appeared at just the right time for bored school kids to kickstart a music career without even noticing it. It’s simplicity and speed made it popular amongst young grime producers, and put it at the center of a scene far less concerned with high fidelity than it was with simple 8-bar loops that could be blaster from a cellphone and discarded.

Brothers Skepta and JME graduated to Music 2000 from Mario Paint, and breakout grime outfit So Solid Crew managed to eke a couple of bona fide hits from the software, so it was hardly long before word started to spread that it was more than merely a toy.

Elsewhere in London, Benga and Skream both used to bang out tracks regularly – Benga even gave a quick demonstration to Red Bull Music Academy and made a track while he was being interviewed. Glaswegian producer Hudson Mohawke also told FACT that it was where he first learned to cut up samples and loops.

It wasn’t just the UK that cracked on to Music’s appeal either, Lex Luger discovered his talent for beats while fiddling with MTV Music Generator 3, and videogame composer Jim Guthrie still finds time to put in the hours on the software. Apparently he still keeps a PS1 around just to use MTV Music Generator, and even takes it on the tour bus with him.”
